The [Political] Persecution....it never stops!!!1!

Yes, I am once again posting videos from the Daily Show instead of making actual posts. It saddens me too, but it is desperately necessary. The first segment of yesterday's show was chock full of truth. But, this particular video was also, and it features Palin, so I thought that I would display this one:

Now, I honestly have no idea whether the press was completely fair to Palin or not. Mostly because I know that I would be biased enough to see every criticism as fair criticism, and was too preoccupied with seeing whether the more liberal candidates were being unfairly bashed to worry about the same happening for the other side, which I presumed to be favored, due to the fact that I personally didn't often hear any such assaults on their character, or whatever else Palin is implying. Of course, her cries of persecution are a wee bit suspect when she brings up Katie Couric (who hardly seemed like she was out to get Palin) and Tina Fey (for doing an impression of a political figure on a comedy show, which Palin herself had an appearance on and claimed to have enjoyed it. Apparently being a good sport about it was only an act). So...yeah. I have long since stopped caring about Palin, but this was too funny to leave ignored.

As for Bush (in the linked video): he has seemed to be a tragic figure for the last two years or so. Mostly because he goes up on stage, makes vague allusions to his failings without actually admitting fault, and seems perpetually choked up. This appearance isn't much different, except that his stubbornness and ignorance have gone back to their normal levels despite his obviously wounded ego. So, when you mix the self-pity (which he adamantly and hilariously denies) and reluctant admission of guilt with his standard unwillingness to do just that for fear of seeming weak and his trademark inability to be aware of what is going on, you get him up in front of the press, talking about how he has made mistakes without ever admitting that the major disasters associated with him were actually mistakes. You get him up there, trying to rebut strawman critics, and trying to desperately prove to us how he is "damned if he does, damned if he doesn't." It is kind of pathetic, and makes me wonder whether to continue to pity him or to once again realize that he is just a self-centered asshole. It's hard to say.

She's a whiny little bitch.
Let's take a look at these attacks on Obama for a moment:

Not a natural born citizen ...
false birth certificate.
Connected to political events in Kenya.
Radical Muslim
Campaign funded by Hugo Chavez
Inappropriate internet fundraising
OH YEAH! Don't forget -
He PALS around with terrorists!!

On the other hand - Tina Fey used Palin's exact verbage when she was attacking her.

Pliny-the-in-Between said...

I believe the Republican party has coined a new term for her value system: Palinolithic...

Asylum Seeker said...

Yeah, I heard some people say that some of Tina Fey's impressions weren't true comedic routines because it was almost word for word things that Palin actually said.

And I was also under the impression that there was both a large quantity, and high quality of negative opinions aired about Obama (namely, the ones that you have mentioned, which probably eclipse any criticism of Palin...especially because they are also false).

And, Pliny, I can only hope that the Republican party refers to her particular set of beliefs in that manner. Because it would bring me joy.

Pliny-the-in-Between said...

As an aside, if it is true that love is never having to say you are sorry then Mr Bush demonstrated his undying love for America during his last press conference...

Asylum Seeker said...

ZING! He always said that he loved America, but I thought it was just talk!

ok ok I've been chastised for being a pithy smart ass, no more colorful comments from me - only constructive ones.

Stacy,

Don't forget that they called him a >gulp< Socialist, too.

Right, right...the socialism. Around the advent of Joe the Plumber as a political pundit. That was a funny few weeks.

I thought that born-agains were supposed to be humble.

What's all this, "Hey, I'm like Lincoln, misunderstoof!, that's all!"

What does he want, a freeking statue? Hey, one with a plaque, "He made decisions!"

pboyfloyd said...

Thought that was a typo, but ol' Dubbya is minunderstoof alright.

mac said...

Yes, Stacy.

Let's also remember bringing up Obamas race, as if that mattered, his half-brother, pitiful soul that he is...AND his middle name !

Yeah, the media didn't give the republicans a fair shake .

mac said...

I find it funny that these assholes claim the very same media they are using to be biased.

WTF ??

Asylum Seeker said...

I think that Bush is trying to pull the "they laughed at Einstein and he was a genius. They are laughing at me, therefore I am a genius!" gambit. But he might still be fancying himself into becoming a great President in retrospect, despite everything.

And, I guess all of this is just part of the "liberal media" meme, so I guess it shouldn't surprise us that much.

Stacy S. said...

Right Mac! I forgot about the "Hussein" and "socialist" bits.

Now I'm even more irritated

One thing is always conveniently forgotten by the Republicans.

The side that makes the most outright blunders in the most comical way, is invariably the side that gets the most negative press. For completely logical reasons.

Anonymous said...

It sort of reminds me of Michelle Bachman saying her 'unamerican' comments, made on TV, were just an urban legend.

Palin is upset because she was portrayed as the imbecile she is. No sane person would be comfortable having her on their school or city board, let alone running their country.

She can cry now all she wants, but when you do crazy things, like being a 'spiritual warrior', people tend to call it for what it is.

When you do stupid things, like when someone asks you which newspapers or magazines you read you say "All of them" then people say it's stupid. Face it, she'd have sounded more intelligent if she'd just said US Weekly...

It's that revisionist BS, but now they think they can do it just a few days after something happens. It needs to stop.

Asylum Seeker said...

"The side that makes the most outright blunders in the most comical way, is invariably the side that gets the most negative press."

That's true. You can't really consider it bias when it's just accurate portrayals of the failings of the candidates on each ticket, and it just happens that some make more idiotic missteps than the others. Of course, since Palin was relatively unknown beforehand and was basically picked so that McCain could claim to have a historic as well, they probably did get a little more coverage (positive or negative) than they would have gotten normally. Of course, it's Palin's shortcomings that assured that that coverage turned negative, and McCain's fault for trying to pick her for novelty's sake in the first place.

"It sort of reminds me of Michelle Bachman saying her 'unamerican' comments, made on TV, were just an urban legend."

That is a hilarious way to avoid responsibility. I mean, at least Bill O'Reilly just accuses people of lying or something when calling him on previous comments he's made. Saying that it is an "urban legend" though? Comedy gold.

"She can cry now all she wants, but when you do crazy things, like being a 'spiritual warrior', people tend to call it for what it is."

"Spiritual warrior"! Ahahahaha. Reminds me of the God Warrior . The resemblance...it is striking

Revisionist history and denial works unfortunately. The neocons have been extremely successful in using the following strategy to great success -

Asylum,

You are right on the mark. I appreciate your willingness to see that perhaps you were biased. But you weren't. She is cringe-worthy. McCain went for shoring up the conservative base and the PR, that's it.

When he brought her out, the cynic inside me went, "Good move GQ." The idealist went, "I hope she's good, I hope she's good (politically speaking)." Oh brother, she wasn't.

Don't you think she and George Bush would do a great talk show?
Maybe called: Beer & Fish, True Amareka, or Some Like It Conservative.

Watcha think?

Anonymous said...

I think Bush is genuinely delusional. He has a zeal for his morality that isn't tempered by reason.

No matter the ideology, reason is a necessary component to leadership. Obama is reasonable. Even Bush's dad was reasonable.

-----------------------------------

Bush Jr. is a true believer in Bush Jr. Ego without insight.

What do you think a soldier is to George Bush vs. Obama? To Bush an American soldier is his soldier. It seems like Obama would see him or her as an American, who is a soldier. Big difference, makes for less wars too.

Don't worry, now that I have internet, I never play the vidja games without a little online resources to help...um...perfect my strategy. Yes. That's how I will phrase it.

"Don't you think she and George Bush would do a great talk show?"

I would pay money to see that. Granted, not "$1000 a plate fundraiser dinner" money, or "ten thousand dollar spending spree on GOP dime" money, but money all the same.

"To Bush an American soldier is his soldier. It seems like Obama would see him or her as an American, who is a soldier."

As long as he doesn't see them as a means to an end, that's an improvement.

"Oh, yin without yang. Why didn'tcha say so in the first place?"

Oh, come now! Morality and reason are hardly a yin-yang relationship. Ego and insight might be, but not morality and reason. (Though it admit that when self-interest sways the wrong way, they can get a little ugly towards one another...).

Michael said...

You know, I was hopeful that when Obama won the election, we wouldn't have to hear Sarah Palin's name or voice for a while... but unfortunately she won't give up...

Saint Brian the Godless said...

Oh, come now! Morality and reason are hardly a yin-yang relationship. Ego and insight might be, but not morality and reason.
----------------------
Ego and insight arent. Both are yin.

Insight is obviously intuitive, from the "feminine side" but the ego itself is a construct of the "feminine" side, the emotional side, as well. The ego lives in the yin, and uses the yang like a library or a tool.

Oh, and whenever we ask ourselves a question in our minds, that is our yin side formulating the question, since all curiousity is to satisfy a DESIRE. And the answer always comes from the Yang side. Our inner questions are always our emotional intuitive side asking our logical rational side for information.

Morality is based in empathy, which is yin, feminine.

Reason? Masculine side. Obviously.

So there's a duality between morality asn reason. Too much reason (or not enough higher emotions) and you can convince yourself not to be moral. Only the development of the HIGHER emotional side can create empathy which is the root of morality.

Lower emotions (We all have these) are the self-focused ones. Fear hatred, lust, etc.

Higher emotions are other focused, and these are the ones that must be developed in order to be a balanced individual.

Saint Brian the Godless said...

And proving that it is a duality, too much morality, an inappropriate amount, can cripple reason. These are the walking wounded, the over-empathetic ones that can't explain the world to themselves in a manner that doesn't hurt them too much to think about it.

Saint Brian the Godless said...

Our inner questions are always our emotional intuitive side asking our logical rational side for information.
+++
Thia also further supports the idea that the ego is "in" the Yin side and not the Yang.

Because an inner question must come from the Yin side and be posed to the Yang side, this indicates that the side that we "feel" represents "us" or in other words the side that we feel we reside in, is the yin. I mean, you can't really FEEL anything with the Yang side in the first place.

Your basic sense of identity is a feeling, not a thought. YOu can try to put it into thoughts, but that's automatically diluting it. We live in our emotional sides, and use our intellectual sides, but we never live in our intellectual sides and use our emotional sides.

Saint Brian the Godless said...

The Yang is verbal. The Yin is pictorial, and incorporates all sense images. The Yang is Linear. The Yin is Lateral.

So the yin doesn't even have WORDS. It uses the Yang to formulate words to represent it's desire properly. Then it again uses the verbal side, the Yang, to answer. Then the verbal answer is translated into nonverbal imagery and produces the emotional response, satisfaction or anger or whatever.

It's a lot like two people in one skull sometimes. Two very different people with complimentary skill sets.

Saint Brian the Godless said...

Oh, I was thinking of ego as "sense of self" and missed the context there. You mean it as an inflated ego, egotism.

Inflated sense of self. Again, due to a Yin problem. Lack of development of the higher emotions, with overdevelopment of the lower instead. So whatever intellectual side development there is, will be in thrall to the egotism, will only serve to further it, and will not be used to improve the self by reflecting on the ego and the emotional side. If there is a LOT of intellectual development in the individual in question, along with the utter lack of higher emotions, we have a Hitler. If not so much, we just have the self-centered asshole.

Egotism isn't intellectual nor rational in nature. It's Yin, too.

Saint Brian the Godless said...

Now it you are talking about things like mathematical ability, facility with languages, high verbal ability, high reasoning skills, good factual memory... that's all Yang for sure.

But when we use any of those, it's our desire to use them that happens first before we do. The desire is born in the Yin, always. Again, it's always the Yin asking the Yang questions.

Even if one wanted to ask one's self ABOUT their emotional side, it's still your yin asking your yang about your yin!

Saint Brian the Godless said...

Let's consider another duality, one that people rarely consider...

The duality between loving-kindness (yin) and limitation/descriminationatory ability (yang).

If you're the kind, loving King that is so loving and caring of all people that he trusts his enemies, then you're a poor king indeed. The republicans always accuse the dems of this one...
BUT...
On the flip side, if you're all descriminatory ability and severity and limitation, with no loving-kindness, you're a tyrant, an evil person.

Saint Brian the Godless said...

I for instance am a caring person at the core, so it took a conscious effort on my part to develop my descriminatory side.

This is a very important thing to develop though.

It is the side that tells us when it's necessary to amputate the gangrenous limb, to punish the errant child, to be suspicious of people that might mean us harm, to sense when someone is lying to us...

It's the tough side.

palin's whining just about makes me sick.

i find it terribly ironic too.

the conservatives jumped all over the "hillary crying on tv" thing, but where are they to tell sarah palin to man up and take some accountability for portraying herself as an idiot.

i just about died when she said tina fey exploited her. she agreed to go on the show even AFTER they had tina fey playing her.

i think she's just upset because she found out she couldn't just go on tv and smile pretty and wink and act all folksy and cute and have everybody fall in love with her.

i think sarah needs to sit down, shut up, and accept the fact that she was trying to play major league ball with nothing but pee wee t-ball credentials.

A lot of good stuff offered up by you, Brian, but I love this part:
"Your basic sense of identity is a feeling, not a thought. YOu can try to put it into thoughts, but that's automatically diluting it. We live in our emotional sides, and use our intellectual sides,"

That seems like a dead on description to me.

"The good news? The Mayan calendar says the world will end on December 21, 2012."

Uggh. My little brother has been bringing up ad nauseaum, insisting that Obama is "our last President" for this specific reason. Makes my head hurt...

"the conservatives jumped all over the "hillary crying on tv" thing"

I remember that! It was interesting only because I heard that brought up as an indication of sexism in the media because 1. they always portray males crying as something more noble and not a sign of weakness and 2. these same people would harp on and on about how she is cold and emotionless before the crying episode! Now, unlike the double standards that Bush is claiming that he is held to (e.g. his belief that people would have been mad with him whether or not he taken Air Force One down to New Orleans after Katrina, completely missing the damn point) this one seems like a legitimate one. And one that is completely irrelevant and ridiculous. But, there ya go.

"i think sarah needs to sit down, shut up, and accept the fact that she was trying to play major league ball with nothing but pee wee t-ball credentials."

That sums it up well enough.

I am a prophet. I foretold that the world would NOT end @ 12:01 AM on January 1, 2000. And I was RIGHT!

My next prophecy is that the world will not end on December 21, 2012.
I got a forty dollar bill says I'm right. Any takers?

Asylum Seeker said...

Betting the world will end? I'm game. It's like betting that you are going to die on a specific date, or about to earn an amount of money so large that the amount wagered would be insignificant to you. That is to say: a sure-fire victory.

GearHedEd said...

OK, I got that. If the world ends on 21 Dec 2012, I owe you forty bucks.

Asylum Seeker said...

As long as I don't owe you any money if I am wrong, deal. That's the best kind of bet...the kind where you can only earn money if something improbable happens!

Asylum Seeker said...

Wait a minute...Brian. You linked here from AOL Newsblogs saying that you were debating Big Brain stuff? I thought you were just talking about the nature of yin and yang as it is used in its full context (rather than the looser context of "things that are opposite of one another" that the terms are used to suggest informally). Is that related to Big Brain and just wasn't paying enough attention?
